The prototype of this icon was painted by Saint John of Damascus in the 8th century. It was reproduced by the monks of the Hilandar Serbian Orthodox Monastery on Mount Athos and gifted to the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God Serbian Orthodox Monastery (New Gracanica) in Third Lake, Illinois.
