by Fr. Joshua Makoul
In our broken world, many Christians find their spiritual progress hindered or stalled by psychological wounds from their past. But these wounds can be healed with the proper treatment. Priest and licensed therapist Joshua Makoul shows how we can draw on the insights and resources of both the Church and modern psychology to help us come to terms with the past and use it to further our path to union with God.
About the Author: Fr. Joshua Makoul has been serving as the dean of St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh since 2012. Before that time, he worked in the counseling field for sixteen years. This involved work in family-based, school-based, and outpatient settings. Fr. Joshua received two years of training in family therapy at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center and completed a one-year certificate course in cognitive behavior therapy at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Fr. Joshua received his master’s degree in counseling psychology from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and his bachelor’s in psychology from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is licensed in the state of Pennsylvania for counseling. For seminary he attended Holy Cross Seminary in Boston and received an M.Div.

Editorial Reviews
"Fr. Joshua Makoul is an Orthodox Christian of unfailing dedication to God and His creation. As a particularly genuine and empathetic man with a strong sense of God’s compassion, Fr. Joshua brings his theological and psychological training to his parish ministry and the Pittsburgh community. He is faithful to God and witnesses authentically to his family, parish, and the world. We are pleased to have his book Healing Your Wounded Soul: Growing from Pain to Peace available to those on the Christian pilgrimage to healing and salvation. His expression of the wisdom or our faith and modern social sciences is comprehensible and accessible. I recommend this book to everyone serious about their faith and their health." -Bishop John, Antiochian Orthodox Bishop of Worcester and New England
"It was with deep joy and appreciation that I read this very insightful book written by Fr. Joshua. It is one of the most comprehensive, yet condensed and easy-to-read Blue Print for inner healing and movement toward salvation using both the advancements made in the contemporary counseling arena and the rich Orthodox Christian tradition and ethos. It incorporates the various essential nuances of inner psychological and spiritual landscape with clarity and ease, and provides the framework for step-by-step transformation. Most importantly, it brings hope that internal suffering does not have to be endless, nor necessitates any longer decades in the desert.
Written by a priest who is also a mental health provider, this book represents a very important and much needed contribution in the Orthodox Christian world. I believe it could greatly benefit the church by including it on the required reading list in Seminaries in order to assist future clergy and lay leaders in their own spiritual growth. In addition, this book could be very beneficial in their ministry by incorporating contemporary language and mental health methodologies in order to reach our neighbors, who are thirsty to be encountered within their modern world views.
More broadly, any Christian serious about their spiritual growth and movement towards union with God would greatly benefit from reading, studying, and being inspired by this book. May this book be a source of edification, hope, and salvation to all readers." -Ioana Popa MD, BCC is a psychiatrist, national board certified and psychosynthesis certified life coach, IFS certified practitioner, and spiritual care provider (2CPE units). She is the co-founder of Along The Journey, Coaching, Consulting and Spiritual Care and a Counselor at Hellenic College Holy Cross, Brookline MA.
