The Boundaries of Shame: Entering the Presence of God, with Fr. Stephen Freeman - An Ancient Faith Webinar

Closed doors, locked gates, forbidden places, hidden treasures - the Scriptures give us many images of boundaries beyond which stands the presence of God. Whether it is the return to paradise (a theme in Great Lent) or the asking, seeking, knocking within Christ's teaching on the Kingdom, there seems to be something between us and our union with God. The most fundamental experience of an encounter with such boundaries belongs to the emotion of shame. What does this mean and how to we go beyond it?

Fr. Stephen has written and spoken extensively on the experience of shame, both from the perspective of Orthodox tradition as well as current clinical understandings. This talk looks to explore the purpose and meaning of “healthy shame” and its importance for us in knowing God.

"For there is a shame that brings sin; and there is a shame which is glory and grace." Sirach 4:21
